Steps of Donning & Doffing of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) for COVID-19 Care:

Donning steps: [Should be in a dedicated room, better if 2 person do at a time so one can look after another, even one can read loudly the steps from a written paper to help other]

[Hand hygiene>Shoe cover>Hand hygiene> Inner gloves>Gown except hood>N95 mask>Hood>Googles+Face shield>Outer Gloves]

  1. Remove regular clothes with surgical gown.

  2. Wear plastic/rubber boots.

  3. (Remove wrist watch/jewellaries/pocket contents.

  4. Secure hair (Female)

  5. Put on a boot cover.

  6. Hand hygiene (Hexisol 20 second. Allow hands to dry before the next step.)

  7. Put on inner gloves(1st, later to take 2nd gloves).

  8. Wear a Gown, except hood (Check any hole before wearing).

  9. N95/equivalent  Mask: 

    • Wear by holding outside/front: (Not between inside & outside).

    • Pull the upper strap above the ear.

    • Pull lower strap in nape of neck.

    • Mold started from nose by both hands (don't use 1 hand that may cause distortion)

    •  Seal test:[Ideally need fit test that is probably not possible at this moment] 

      • Exhale any air leak by sides: If it leaks, readjust.

      • Inhale deeply to see the mask is sucked in (mostly for mask with valve).


  1. Put on hood (check hair, ear all are covered, no skin exposed)

  2. Goggles/ Face shield

  3. Gloves: put on outer (2nd) gloves. Ensure cuffs are pulled over the sleeve of the gown.

  4. If you suspect any contamination use hexisol on gloves.

  5. All parts of the body should remain covered during a range of movements. (e.g. Extended arm, bent waist etc.)


Doffing steps: 
[NB: 
  • Among these, the most important part is Doffing because this is one of the most
    vulnerable time to catch infection .
  • Take adequate time for it, Don't hurry after exhausted duty.
  • Note that the Last part to remove mask, don't touch mask before everything is removed,
    may be until outside the isolation room)

[Any Gross contamination>Hand hygiene> Boot cover>Hand hygiene>Outer gloves>Hand hygiene>face shield/goggles>hood>Hand hygiene>Gown>Hand hygiene>Inner gloves>Hand hygiene>Mask>Hand wash with soap & water>Shower)

  1. Go to the Dedicated doffing room [ It may be marked with RED text “High risk area”.

  2. Observe any gross contamination of the gown, if so clean with 1: 10 bleach.

  3. Remove gross contamination of gloves by tissue.

  4. Remove boot cover by rubbing between the feet. Hold only the inner side & trash.

  5. Hexisol wash of outer gloves.

  6. Remove outer gloves. Do not touch inner gloves(Gloves & gloves technique).

  7. Hexisol (on inner gloves)

  8. Remove face shield/goggles without touching face/head.

  9. Uncover hood (don't touch inside)

  10. Hexisol hand hygiene.

  11. Remove gown (if disposable, rip it off along with gloves(- Keep it in trash/leak proof container/Biohazard bag). If reusable follow the steps:

    • Lift chin.

    • Find Zip at level of belly. (note inner gloves are still in hand)

    • Carefully trace fingers up to find the zip fastener with 1 hand, hold the outer part of the gown with the other hand.

    • Unzip completely.

    • Roll down the gown completely without touching the inside.

    • Keep it in trash.


  1. Hexisol wash (of inner gloves).

  2. Remove inner gloves.

  3. Hexisol wash on hand 20 sec..

  4. If possible, use new gloves.

  5. Remove mask.: You can go far from the aerosolized area & then remove the mask.

    • Bend forward.

    • Grab the lower strap 1st, pull it in front & release.

    • Grab the upper strap, pull in the front and the mask will be hanging without touching the mask.

    • Remove hair bonnet if have.

  6. Hexisol 20 sec.

  7. Disinfect washable boot.

  8. Hexisol wash & remove 3rd gloves (if used 3rd gloves) .

  9. Hexisol.

  10. Clean the floor with bleach.

  11. Hand wash with soap & water.

  12. If possible take a shower immediately. Try Don't touch your face, eyes until you take a shower.
